The Giving Report 2022: What It Means for Canadian Charitable Giving

Recently, CanadaHelps released The Giving Report for 2022. This report provides an in-depth look at charitable giving in Canada, and offers predictions for the future of giving. Today, we’ll discuss some key findings from the report and what they could mean for the future of Canada’s charitable sector.

The Giving Report 2022

The Giving Report 2022 is the fifth edition of an annual report released by CanadaHelps.org, a public foundation providing technology and resources to empower Canadians to learn about and give to registered charities in Canada.

This report is the most comprehensive study of Canadian charitable giving trends, and CanadaHelps plays a powerful role in the charitable sector. As the report explains: “Since 2000, over 3.4 million people have given more than $2.1 billion through CanadaHelps.”

Key Findings

As for other key findings from this year’s report, they include:

  • The “giving gap” (a term that describes the continuous decline in the percentage of Canadians that donate to charities) continues to widen.
  • Generational differences in charitable giving include older generations being more inclined to donate to medical research and treatment, senior care, and poverty. On the other hand, younger generations prioritize racial injustice and climate change. Interestingly, mental health is a cause every generation lists in their top five concerns.
  • Many young Canadians report not having the means to donate to the causes they care about, but they do plan to give once they have the means. Further, many young Canadians who might not be able to give financial gifts, donate their time and other resources to protests or sharing information on social media, and other methods of getting the word out.

Unfortunately, CanadaHelps also predicts a 12% decline in total giving from 2019 to 2021. This is largely due to pandemic impacts and inflationary concerns, making it even more challenging for charities to meet growing demand.
