A Guide to Making Stewardship a Year-Round Rhythm

Stewardship, at its heart, is about relatedness. It’s the practice of recognizing that everything we have — our time, our skills, our financial resources, our prayers — is part of how we participate in God’s mission. Giving is an expression of faith lived out in community.

When we frame stewardship this way, it stops being something we do for a few weeks. It becomes part of how we worship, how we serve, how we care for one another, and how we reach out to our neighbourhoods.

Why Year-Round Stewardship Works

When communities talk about giving regularly, people begin to see the connection between their generosity and the ministry it makes possible.

They see the children’s ministry that’s growing. They see the community lunch that serves people every week. They see the pastoral care team visiting homes and hospitals. They see the refugee family being supported.

When people understand the impact of their giving, they give with joy towards a shared vision for the place and people in their community.

“Generosity begets generosity. This is especially so when generosity is rooted in the rich soil of relatedness.”

— Henri Nouwen, A Spirituality of Fundraising

Year-round stewardship also reduces donor fatigue.

When we communicate our vision for a hopeful future throughout the year, we create an environment that celebrates our shared mission.

One community that embodies this rhythm beautifully is St. Clement’s Church in Toronto. Their approach to annual stewardship is supported by simple giving pathways that keeps their generosity visible all year.

St. Clement’s mission and vision is supported by a strategic plan organized around four pillars: The Worship Experience, Engagement through Christian Education, Deepening Relationships with One Another, and Reaching Out — each supported by Sustainable Operations. For every pillar, they share not only what they do, but the real impact it has.

This approach helps the community understand exactly where their giving goes and who it serves. If we aim to offer this kind of clarity in our communications, we turn giving into something people want to be a part of.

Six Rhythms for Year-Round Stewardship that Helps Build Clarity and Faith

Small, consistent moments of storytelling, gratitude and connection can gradually change the way people experience stewardship.

Here are six practical ways your faith community can begin weaving stewardship into everyday life.

Share Impact Stories Regularly

Don’t wait until the annual report. Each month, share a story: in your bulletin or your newsletter. Let people hear from the volunteer, the newcomer or the family served.

Connect Giving to Moments of Community Gatherings

During special gatherings, consider communicating the mission and vision of your community. You can offer pathways that encourage people to participate. When people see their generosity at work in real time, it deepens their sense of participation.

Thank Volunteers and Donors Often

Gratitude is one of the most powerful stewardship tools you have. Remember to thank your volunteers by simple but heartfelt gestures like thank you cards or phone calls.

Offer Simple, Recurring Giving Options

Make it easy for people to give regularly without thinking about it each week. Offer monthly-giving, online platforms, and mobile options to help ease friction.

Invite Time and Skills

When you ask people to give, include their time and talents. Consider including A Gift Discernment form which lets people name how they’d like to serve, whether through hospitality, pastoral care, teaching, outreach, or behind-the-scenes administration.

Report Back Clearly and Visually

People want to know their giving matters. Using simple visuals like a pie chart, a short summary with key metrics shows people where the money goes and what it accomplishes.

A shared purpose, a stronger community

Generosity grows through small, consistent moments throughout the year: expressing thanks, sharing a story, meeting a need, supporting a ministry, or welcoming a neighbour. Over time, these moments become a rhythm. One that carries your community through the year with gratitude, purpose, and a deeper sense of what you are building together.
